Abstract

Background: Currently the prevalence of family planning use had dropped from 61.4% in the year 2005-2006(NFHS-3) to 53.2% in the year 2015-2016(NFHS-4). Hence this study was done to ascertain the prevalence and determinants of contraceptive use among married women .

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and determinants of contraceptive use among married women in reproductive age group of 18-45 years.

Methodology: It was a cross sectional study in the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) of Department of Community Medicine in Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences. Five villages were selected randomly and the study participants were questioned using a pretested and pre designed questionnaire. The sample sizes were derived by Probability Proportional to Size.

Results: The study showed that most of the women belonged to nuclear family (90.5% ) and overall contraceptive usage of 75.7%. The most commonly used method was female sterilization 65.2% and majority of them got information from health workers (74.1%).The reason for undergoing tubectomy was completion of family (65%). The main reasons for not using contraception were lack of knowledge (4.8%) and fear of side effects (18.9%).

Conclusion: This study enlightened the reasons for the non practice of contraception and helped in identifying the gaps in the health care. Also it helped to focus on the determinants of contraception use.
