Abstract

Context: Urban Primary Health Centres are being upgraded with a vision to deliver “Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC)”. In 2023, the Government of West Bengal also strived to uplift the quality of services provided through UPHCs by rolling out “Piloting of model UPHC and U-HWC”.

Aims: To compare the available resources, services and outputs at Piloted Model and Conventional Urban-Primary Health Centres in North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal.

Settings and Design: An analytical study with cross-sectional design was conducted in a Piloted Model and a Conventional U-PHCs in the North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal.

Methods and Material: Conducted during July-August, 2023 by spot observation, review of records and face-to-face interview of the health personnel and the patients.

Statistical Analysis Used: The data were collected and entered into Microsoft Office Excel 2016 (Microsoft Corp, Redmond, WA, USA) and then presented using descriptive statistics.

Results: It was found that the UPHCs were comparable in regard to most amenities. The piloted UPHC was performing better than the conventional UPHC in terms of drugs and diagnostics, telemedicine and digitization, health promotion activities, referral and other services. Still, it was lagging behind the conventional UPHC in terms of the frequency of holding dengue awareness meetings.

Conclusions: The piloted UPHC had more human resources and is providing increased number of services to the urban population compared to the conventional UPHC.
