Abstract

Background: India, a nation grappling with the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, faces a peculiar paradox within its healthcare system. While its medical professionals work tirelessly to combat these very ailments, they themselves harbour an alarming threat: a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This underscores the importance of Doctors prioritizing their own health and wellbeing.

Objective: To assess prevalence and correlates of known risk factors of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) among doctors in Thiruvalla, Kerala.

Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted among 280 doctors of both genders Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta district, Central Kerala from June to December 2023. The data was analyzed using the IBM statistical package for social sciences version 20. The results have been presented as tables and charts showing percentages. Chi-square test and odds ratio were used to analyze the association between the study variables and CVD risk among the study participants.

Results: According to the present study there was a CVD risk among 36.8% of the study participants. Inadequate intake of dietary fibre, Diabetes, Hypertension, Dyslipidemia and tobacco use were found to be risk factors for CVD among the doctors in the study.

Conclusion: By acknowledging the prevalent CVD risk factors and implementing comprehensive interventions, we can protect the critical workforce of doctors.
